For more than a decade, smartphone makers have sold devices on the strength of their cameras. Each new generation promised sharper detail, brighter night shots, and features once reserved for pro gear. For a while, this felt like genuine progress: larger sensors crept into thin chassis, image pipelines matured, and the average person could capture surprisingly refined pictures from a pocketable device. Mobile photography democratized quality.
Lately, though, the language of progress has shifted. Instead of tangible leaps, we’re bombarded with spec-sheet theater. The headline number is megapixels, cranked to 108 MP or 200 MP, stamped everywhere as proof of superiority. But the images these sensors produce are usually binned down to 12, 24, or 48 MP. In real use, that “200 MP” is mostly marketing, not meaningful resolution.
The reason isn’t laziness; it’s physics. Sensor area and lens diameter can’t grow indefinitely in a device that must stay thin, light, and pocketable.
